•  Great South Run – 26th October 2008

On a cold and wet autumn day, 6 friends took to the streets of Portsmouth to run 10 miles in support of Pete Franklin and BCRT. Sammi Medlin, Sophie Medlin, Harry Steel, Christopher Hay, Helen Jarrett and Ben Walker raised a fantastic £1,332 – fantastic, well done!

•  Kilimanjaro Trek and Climb – 10th October 2008

On October 10th l flew to Tanzania to start a 7-day trek and climb of Kilimanjaro. This is no easy task. Kilimanjaro is the tallest freestanding mountain in the world – the Uhuru peak stands at almost 6,000 metres high. The success rate for reaching the peak is 60%. In addition, I took what is regarded by many as the most challenging ascent, known as the Machame route. This took us from arid plains, through rainforest, into alpine terrain and finally up to the peak where altitude sickness causes problems for many climbers. In short, it is a very challenging trek that has required significant preparation and training. Other than for the pure challenge, I also wanted to raise money for Bone Cancer Research Trust. And so by the simple fact that I am writing this, I'm back from my adventures and glad to say that I made it to the top, despite lack of sleep, breathing problems and having a fever!!! All symptoms of altitude sickness. It was an amazing and incredibly difficult 7 days with lots of great memories and photos - camping above the clouds, gazing at a sky full of stars and watching the sunrise at the top. I'm really proud of myself and can't believe that I stood at the highest point in Africa! I am also incredibly proud of raising just over £1000 for BCRT! Mark Robinson

•  The Liverpool Asic’s 10k Run 'run4paul' – 5th October 2008

What an amazing day. The effort that had been put in by the people participating in the run on behalf of me and BCRT was fantastic. In no particular order, the people who undertook the task were My Dad, my brothers Tony & Michael, my Sister Kerry, family friends Walter Bird, Helen "Gym", Ashley Walker & Ken Walker, my cousins John, Lee, Michelle & Kelvin, my work friends Luke, Ste & Richard, friends David Brick, Emma Brick and Emma's boyfriend, and my brothers work mate Lee Kershaw.  That's 19 people all together, and I'm sure that a lot of money will have been raised for the Bone Cancer Research Trust in doing so too. I cannot thank everyone enough for putting in such a fantastic effort. For more pictures, visit www.run4paul.350.com. Paul Gavin

Jamie Bentley auctioned his Grandad, who had come prepared with his Elvis outfit and for £100 donation to the BCRT, Grandad entertained everyone with his repertoire!  He was  so good that he’s been booked for next year! A fantastic £566.78 was raised for BCRT!

•  Celebration Evening in support of Paul Gavin – 19th September 2008

The evening took place on a Friday evening in the Beechwood Community Centre in Runcorn. The night was organised by Linda Jones, her daughters Susan and Debbie, and many others who helped behind the scenes. I always thought that the night was going to be brilliant, however it beat all expectations and was simply unforgettable. It was a great bunch of people who all came along to support the charity and to celebrate with me and my family, and we all had a ball. There was a brilliant raffle, auction, singer and a disco, and I even showed my snakehips to the lucky audience, and had a good dance! Another brilliant factor of the night was that all money raised was donated to the Bone Cancer Research Trust, my chosen charity. Thanks to everyone’s generosity and the organisation of the night astonishingly £1000 was raised.  What a fantastic achievement.  So for this reason especially, I’d like to give a big thankyou to the organisers and entertainers for providing a great night, and not forgetting all those who came along and supported the evening. •  Three Peaks Challenge – 19th July 2008

James, Edd, Zannah and Myself left London at dawn and drove North, arriving in Fort William at 5pm. The weather was foul - driving rain and low cloud - but there were other groups on the mountain and the path is quite good, so we set off. We made the summit in under 2 hours but, with no visibility and in freezing rain, didn't picnic. I did take the time to climb up on top of the monument up there. Knowing you are the highest person in the British Isles at that time is quite satisfying! The way down was hard work, the rocks were wet and slippery and the wind was against us. We finally made the car, wet and tired, and set off to Scafell almost immediately - the clock was ticking!

The drive to Scafell went quickly, an hour and a half of driving each and as much sleep as possible, we arrived at 4am. The climb started just before dawn in the same conditions as before. It felt longer, particularly towards the top where there are a number of false summits (a ridge that looks like the top, until you arrive and find another climb ahead). We didn't linger at the top, another photo in the whiteout and back down the path. The descent was faster this time, when you're cold and a warm car is waiting you don't hang around!

It took longer than we thought to get to Snowdon and, when we finally arrived, we couldn't park! We drove for half an hour around the mountain and finally found a spot near the railway route. Taking that path - the main, and longest of the five routes - frustrating, but in hindsight was kinder on our fatigued legs. The weather was positively balmy after the last two peaks and we reached the top in two hours. Turning to come down, the clouds lifted and we were faced with a breathtaking view that really made the trip. Our final descent down that long, smooth path was easy after the other two, with the finish in sight we ran the whole way. The sun was shining and we were all looking forward to an evening of pub food, good beer and a comfortable bed. We got to the bottom in just over three hours, finishing the challenge in 22 hours and 48 minutes. Cool. George Neville-Jones

•  Panther Promotions – 7th July 2008

Panther promotions are a promotions company based in the North West who put on a few shows a year in the name of Adam Panther to raise money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. We put on bands of a good mix of music, such as Pop punk and heavy metal. So far we have raised over £3,000 just from 3 shows. Our most recent show on July the 7th was another amazing night. It included Manchester’s finest Ska band Sonic Boom Six, London’s Paige, local support from Smudge, Just Panic, Kid Chino, The City Rats, The assassination of, We are the end, Tea and Biscuits and Mynameishero. Also we brought back Panther Promotions’ favourites Yes Sensei and Me Vs Hero. All the local bands brought tons of fans to the show and amazing performances from Paige and Sonic Boom Six sealed the night as a huge success! Halloween will be our next show and we cannot wait! Metal of course! 31st October 2008, Bar Fresa, Liverpool. Fancy dress for Halloween! Entry is £5. Coheadlining the night are rising Liverpool metal stars The Institution and Sworn Amongst. With support from This Endless Sea, Unsanctum, Elias last Day, Seriph Impaled, Hades chariot, and Right to Remain.

•  Emily Blunt Run - 29th June 2008

Friends and family of Emily Blunt turned out in their hundreds to pay tribute to her memory at a fun run which took place at Plock Court just two days after her death following a yearlong battle with osteosarcoma. Kath, Emily’s twin sister had been organising the event to support her sister, which the family decided should still go ahead in Emily’s memory. Kath was delighted with the turnout and believed that Emily would be very proud with the number of supporters who took part in the event which has raised over £14,000 for BCRT. The run was one of two being organised in support of Emily, along with a fun run organised by Airbus in Hamburg which was also raising money for BCRT in support of Emily. Emily’s Dad, Ian, works at Airbus in Hamburg and was delighted to be able to nominate BCRT as the charity to benefit from the event which took place on Sunday 22 June and raised well over £2,000. Thank you very much to the Blunt family and their friends for supporting BCRT, especially with the additional media coverage that Kath and Emily raised in the lead up to Bone Cancer Awareness Week on national TV and press.

•  Tea Party – 29th June 2008

I love a cup of tea and a slice of cake so decided to hold a fundraising tea party for the Bone Cancer Research Trust! Around 45 people turned up at my house on Sunday and we raised a total of £600! I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in November 2004 and recognise the importance of raising money and awareness for a charity such as BCRT. They do a great job and I will continue to support their work in any way I can. Marnie Fraser

On Saturday 21st June, Harry Flower (21), Caroline Franklin (21), Alick Mildmay-White (20), Venetia Maitland (20), Harriet Webb (24), Jamie Orchard (23), Yohanna Franklin (23) and Lucy Walker (20) dressed up in rather fetching pyjamas and nighties and pushed a decorated hospital bed 3 miles around Plymouth. The weather held off and the 8 of them stayed dry the entire way round, catching shoppers in the city centre with buckets for spare change. Having already raised over £500 through sponsorship they managed to raise over £900 on the day, with pledges still coming in they are hoping to raise over £1500 in total. Thanks must be said to the Nuffield Hospital for supplying the bed and also to David May’s Motor Services for donating the hire van free of charge.

•  Anthony Pilcher Bone Cancer Trust Summer Ball – 14th June 2008

A three course meal was followed by an auction featuring a signed Harlequin's rugby ball, a limited edition numbered and signed Pete Wilford print, and 36 pints of Harvey's best bitter. After some dancing, a prize raffle featuring a large teddy and lots of wine and chocolate followed. Over £1000 was raised which will help fund research into bone cancer.

•  Darren Uren's Great Manchester Run – 18th May 2008

On the morning of the run the weather was perfect, my kit was on and I was scared! I arrived in the centre of town about 1 hour before the start of the run. It was manic! There were around 30,000 people running and thousands of people got up early to watch heroes run for their charities. Prior to the run I searched for my masochistic ways by getting my legs waxed for my charity, Bone Cancer Research. It was torture! Especially when Karen Webster decided to rip one of the strips off very slowly.

Anyway, back to the run. I had reached the 5k marker and then disaster strikes. I had a huge blister causing me immense pain, but I struggled through to complete the run in an hour. There’s an immense feeling of pride and happiness when you complete the race as there’s many people cheering and shouting “We’re all proud of you!” This coupled with the amount of support everyone has shown towards my fundraising is something everyone should experience. I just want to finish with a big THANK YOU to Admiral for helping me raise £1,500 towards Bone Cancer Research in memory of a friend who suffered from this disease. On a lighter note, I can’t wait to take part in another fundraising event. Someone did invite me to walk up capital tower 10 times while I was collecting. I can’t remember who you are but please send me an email with the plan. Thanks again.

Darren Uren

•  Nick Pollard Charity Ball – 16th May 2008

Lauren Winter and Alexandra Wright organised a Charity Ball at Tern Hill Hall Hotel in Market Drayton, on 16th May 2008 in aid of The Bone Cancer Research Trust and Cancer Research UK. Lauren told us, 'I wanted to help raise funds and awareness for the BCRT Nick Pollard Fund as he was an amazing friend, who unfortunately lost his battle with Bone Cancer at the age of 21 on the 23rd December 2007. He was so many great things, happy, sporty, kind, caring, determined, handsome, just to name a few. I still can't quite believe he's no longer with us, I will never forget him. I was determined to help raise money for The Bone Cancer Research Trust, to help other people suffering from this cruel and nasty disease.' The charity ball included sit down buffet, raffle, auction and dance, in total a fantastic £6,000 was raised.

•  Ceris Crow runs the London Marathon – 13th April 2008

On Sunday 13 April 2008 Ceris Crow completed the London Marathon raising over £1800 for Bone Cancer Research Trust in the process. Ceris was inspired to run on behalf of the Bone Cancer Research Trust having been a University friend of Guy Francis, who sadly lost his life to bone cancer in 2002. She completed the marathon in just under 5 hours and says the feeling of crossing the finish line is fantastic. “It was overwhelming to finish it and to think of all the money I had raised for Bone Cancer Research Trust”.

“The sense of achievement is something that will last forever. It's one of the hardest things I've ever done, and while it was a great experience I think I will stick to running half marathons in future!”.

“I'd like to give a huge thank you to the BCRT team and to Guy’s parents who have supported me throughout the last four months of training and preparation. Keep up the good work!"

•  Bláthnaid Foley Trust Ball – 22nd March 2008

The second annual Bláthnaid Foley Trust Ball was held in Sligo, Bláthnaid’s home town, on the North West coast of Ireland on the 22nd of March. Bláthnaid was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma at the end of April 2005 and lost her battle just 17 months later on the 16th of September 2006. It was an unfulfilled ambition of Bláthnaid’s to raise funds for research but unfortunately she was never well enough to do so. The Bláthnaid Foley Trust was formed to carry out her wishes and the first Ball was held on the 24th of March 2007 on the eve of her 14th birthday. This year’s event was every bit as successful as the first with the Bone Cancer Research Trust being represented by the night’s guest speaker, Dr Ian Lewis as well as Patrick Hardman and Patricia and Chris Smith. The night commenced with a drinks reception followed by a magnificent four course meal. After the meal Ian delivered a talk on the importance of research into this rare but devastating disease and congratulated the people of Sligo on their tremendous support that has helped the Bláthnaid Foley Trust raise in excess of €200,000 in the 18 months since its formation. Following the speeches a charity Auction was held and substantial funds were raised for this worthy cause. Once the night’s formalities were completed the crowd took to the dance floor and a great time was had by all.

•  Colnbury Club River Scramble – 2nd February 2008

On the 2nd February 2008, a particularly crisp and sunny day, 20 intrepid young men and women braved the cold of the river Coln in order to raise over £1000 for the BCRT. Their harrowing journey took them 4 miles down the river, over weirs and under bridges from The Fossebridge Inn to the Bibury Court in Gloucestershire. The temperature was close to zero degrees. The ‘Colnbury Club’ successfully navigated the treacherous scramble through ice covered water. They all sported well needed wetsuits and the only aid they had was one inflatable item each. These inflatables ranged from surf boards to bottles of whisky (I don’t blame them – although I am not sure if they float). There was great support from family and friends who provided hot soup on route, as well as passers by who supported the cause generously. Huge thanks go to James Russell who is the co founding member of the infamous Colnbury Club. Let’s hope that next year’s event is equally as sunny but perhaps a touch warmer.

•  Nativity Play - 24th December 2007

Playgroup nativity plays were always an interesting experience with many funny stories of past productions. So when it became apparent that many contemporaries from the days of colouring in and drawing on walls, were to be home for Christmas the idea of putting on a nativity play 20 years on sounded like fun. Trying to organise twenty five 20-28 year olds into a nativity play, when very few people were not back home until the Saturday before Christmas was interesting. However with incredible help from an energetic mother and the few ‘actors’ who were around, we managed to cobble together a vaguely funny version of the story with a small amount of local banter. An idea that was just for a bit of fun and to see old friends in the pub afterwards began to get some serious promotion and on Christmas Eve at 5pm the local church was packed. Just over two hundred people turned up to see us perform. It was not Shakespeare but we all had a really good time and I hope the audience did too. The major success of this theatrical enterprise was raising £520 for the BCRT so maybe it will have to be repeated, but hopefully not too soon. Peter Franklin, Holberton, Devon.

•  Adam Panther Auction & Raffle - 13th December 2007

The Auction and Raffle event held at The Fiveways in Ormskirk on Thursday 13th December for the Adam Panther Memorial Bone Cancer Fund has raised approximately £2,000 so far. The star prize did not raise a high enough bid, so we are going to advertise it in a specialist guitar magazine to appeal to a wider audience, as we know it will be a highly sought after item of memorabilia. It is a Gibson Les Paul Custom 68 Special, 1 of only 10 in the world and digitally signed by Justin Hawkins of The Darkness. He himself has 2 of them so we have 1 of the 8 in circulation. It comes with a C.O.A. and is valued at £7500. It was very kindly donated by Adam’s friend, Jonny Appleton who won it in a competition in N.M.E. Thanks to everyone involved who made donations, supported us by buying raffle tickets and attended on the night itself, and a special Well Done to Adam’s girlfriend Manda who has been so supportive and made us all proud of her as well. Sue Newsome (Adam's Mum)

•  Littlewoods Reunion Fund Raiser - 18th November 2007

Steve Michael kindly organised a Littlewoods Re-Union Party at the Exchange Bar in Liverpool to help raise funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust in memory of Jenny Carvell. All guests paid an entrance fee, and Raffle Tickets were sold on the night, which in total raised an amazing £1,475.00 for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. There are so many people to thank and we apologise if we miss anyone out. But we would like to say a huge thank you to the following:- Steve Michael who worked so hard to organise the event. Richie from the Exchange Bar for kindly providing the venue and food. To Steve, Lee, Bernie & Helen who personally contributed to the cost of the buffet on the night. Littlewoods for kindly donating excellent prizes for our raffle, namely an Exercise Rower, boys bicycle, girls bicycle & many more prizes. The Pig & Whistle for bottles of Champagne, Cognac & Malt Whisky. To Woolton Golf Course for donating a game of golf for 4 persons and to many more people who generously donated vouchers and gift sets towards our raffle prizes. Not forgetting to mention Helen, Bernie & Abbie who all worked so hard in helping to sell so many raffle tickets (girls we couldn’t have done it without you!). And finally to everybody who made an effort to turn up & support us on the night and make it such a memorable evening. Thank you all so much for your kind support & generosity. It is greatly appreciated by Tim & Lin Carvell and all at the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

•  Andy Moran 10K Liverpool Run - 7th October 2007

Andy Moran, a friend of Jennifer Carvell’s family, kindly entered the Liverpool 10K run on 7th October 2007 and raised a wonderful £450 in aid of the Bone Cancer Research Trust in memory of Jennifer. His support and assistance in fundraising is greatly appreciated. Andy would especially like to thank The Rolls Royce Sports & Social Club and all the lads who work on the shop floor for their kind sponsorship and generous donations. Well Done!

•  Wigton Moor Junior Football Club Charity Gala - September 2007

A football club has raised £1,000 at their annual charity gala in memory of one of their team mates. Luke Tunstall, a former midfielder at the club, had hoped to become a professional footballer but was diagnosed with bone cancer in April 2005. He underwent surgery on his hips and pelvis a year ago. This was followed up by chemotherapy but he lost his battle with the disease in 2006. Dr Ian Lewis was presented with the cheque by Luke’s Dad, Shaun and Jim Pitts-Murray, Chairman of Wigton Moor Juniors.

•  The Chess Valley Walk - 16th September 2007

On the 16th September, the ‘Last day of Summer’, 45 walkers set off on a walk. It was a beautiful day and friends, neighbours and several dogs, met up at Westwood Park in Little Chalfont, Bucks. The objective was to raise money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. After a photo call and a few warm-up exercises, the party set off. The route was planned through the picturesque Buckinghamshire countryside passing the watercress beds and across the fields, reaching Sarrat at around 12.30. Lunch had been pre-ordered and the walkers all sat down to a much needed drink. The Boot public house and restaurant were very welcoming and made a generous donation. After an hour or so, the team set off once more on the return journey. The sun continued to shine and all along the way, volunteers surprised passers-by thrusting a collection box under their noses! In all, the walk spanned 9 miles and around mid- afternoon, the tired but elated walkers were back at the car park, shedding the walking boots in favour of some softer footwear. As they said their goodbyes, there were pats on the back all round. It had been a great day and a sum of £3600 was raised for the fund.

•  Nottingham Marathon - 16th September 2007

Colleagues and friends of Hannah Millington, PC Pete Parsons and Inspector Matt Downs have raised £500 by completing the Nottingham Marathon. Before Hannah’s diagnosis with Osteosarcoma earlier this year, Pete and Hannah had worked together as partners for nearly 2 years for West Midlands Police.

Pete said, “She is a top girl and a good friend. Matt and I thought this would be an ace thing to do to highlight a cause that is close to Hannah”.

•  Firemen Conquer 3 Peaks - 11th September 2007

It was 8 year old Francesca Haigh, recently diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, who inspired 14 firemen from Bradford Fire Station (Green Watch) to climb the Three Peaks in a day and raise over £5,500! Francesca and her family would like to thanks everybody who donated and took part. Kevin Morton, organiser of the event, said “The weather was good and the beer tasted great at the end! No real injuries although there were a few sore legs at work the next day!”

•  Great Yorkshire Run - 9th September 2007

Two Bone Cancer Research Trust supporters joined thousands of runners in Sheffield for the first ever Great Yorkshire Run, raising hundreds of pounds for the charity. Old school friends Peter Hurst, 28, from Leeds and Nick Lowry, 28, from Manchester, were neck-and-neck for most of the 10K course, but Nick managed to edge ahead at the end, finishing with a time of 53 minutes. Peter wasn’t far behind, though, and finished with a time of 55 minutes. Between them they raised £585 for the BCRT. Peter said, “I expect I’ll be getting a lot of grief from Nick for slacking off at the end! But we’re supporting the work of the BCRT because my wife, Sally, was treated for Osteosarcoma in 2005 so I can put up with a bit of teasing!”

•  CHORF Walk in Wales - 8th September 2007

Wirral-based Lees & Partners Solicitors have raised in excess of £1,000 by completing a sponsored walk in the Welsh ranges. Matthew Smith, a newly qualified solicitor with the firm, organised the walk in aid of CHORF, one of the founding charities of BCRT.

•  Adam Panther Memorial Gig - 10th August 2007

The gig at the Ormskirk Civic Hall went really well, we were impressed by the number of people who attended, everyone had a brilliant time and we know Adam would have been overwhelmed by the turnout. Radio Lancashire came when the bands were setting up and we did a live link to the radio show to let listeners know about the gig, what a wonderful person Adam was and how this was a tribute to his life; hopefully this raised the profile of Osteosarcoma to a wider audience and they have asked us to keep in touch about anything we do in the future. Local bands Resin, Pail, The Sellout Flaw, Hollow Point and Ogun played on the night, all were excellent and said they would love to play again if we repeat the event. The Sellout Flaw raised £300 alone and in total the amount raised topped £1700. We met some fantastic people who we will keep in touch with and were touched at the support we had from Adam’s friends and the bands, it made us very proud to realise how loved he was and the impact he had made on other people’s lives. A lot of hard work was put in by Adam’s best friends Ben and Dave, and his girlfriend Manda in making this evening such a success and we cannot thank them enough. Adam would have been so proud of them all, his friends meant the world to him; they and Manda supported him tremendously throughout his illness and I know this kept him strong. We are planning to make this an annual event but on a larger scale, possibly at the Academy in Manchester with more bands. We have also been promised various items by local businesses and bands Adam loved so are hoping to host a charity auction later in the year to raise more funds.
Sue, Chris & Nathan

However when the aircraft Dr Lewis was travelling from Dublin to Sligo in was struck by lightening and had to return to Dublin, the talk had to be cancelled. He eventually made it to Sligo by car late in the evening and gave a talk to the Trustees. Fiona Foley, Bláthnaid’s mother, said “We were delighted to present Ian with a cheque for the sum of €25,000 to initiate sponsorship of research into Ewing’s Sarcoma, from The Bláthnaid Foley Trust. These funds will be allocated in Bláthnaid’s name and we will be updated on a regular basis by the BCRT as to progress in any related projects.”

•  Leeds 10K Run For All - 24th June 2007

A fantastic day was had by all 56 BCRT runners and their supporters on Sunday June 24th at the Leeds 10km Run for All! A huge thankyou to everyone who took part, banner holders/supporters, Esporta gym for letting us use their showers and Sandinista Bar for hosting our post-run brunch - those smoothies were delicious!! As soon as all sponsor money has been collected, I will confirm how much we have raised, but we are very hopeful of reaching our £10,000 target - watch this space!

It's not too early to sign up for the BCRT team for next year - the list is already started and places will fill quickly, so please e-mail if you would like to be part of Team Bones on Sunday June 22nd 2008!

•  Race for Life in memory of Laura Michêlle Weston - 24th June 2007

On Sunday June 24th Amanda Creevy and Julie Crelling from Droitwich Spa took part in the Race for Life in Evesham, Worcestershire. Amanda wanted to give her sponsor money to BCRT because on 01.01.07 her friend and neighbour lost her fight to Osteosarcoma - Laura Michêlle Weston. Amanda told us, "Laura was just 15 years old. She was a beautiful and very brave young lady, who had had her leg amputated from the hip. She showed such courage and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She had intended to raise the awareness of young people to Osteosarcoma and had wanted to complete the race for life herself - once she had had her false leg fitted. I guess I was just trying to do what she had wanted to do. Her mum, dad and younger sister came to give their support, which was wonderful!"

•  Sponsored Bike Ride - 10 June 2007

I started my ride at 9.00am in the morning, and the weather was probably perfect. The ride started and finished at the Taunton Vale Sports Club, Taunton, Somerset, and I was aiming to raise money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust since a friend of the family was diagnosed. I aimed to complete a 28mile course, yet a little detour in my route cost me 4 miles and I ended up riding 32miles! I got around the route in about 2 and a half hours- without pushing! I raised around £70 for the event, which I was very pleased with. Mike Howe.

•  3rd Annual CHORF Charity Golf Day - 8th June 2007

The event started with soup and sandwiches at noon and a shotgun start at 1.30 pm. There were prizes on Par 3s and longest drive on 17th hole. A "hole in one" was sponsored by Two Mills Honda which gave everyone the chance to win a £28,000 Honda S2000 Sports Convertible. While many top golfers will have been making their preparations, perhaps fine tuning their game in readiness for this year's Open, Liverpool's Nick Dougherty found the time to support the 3rd Annual CHORF Golf day at Wallasey. Nick's father Roger had previously played in the CHORF - Christopher Hardman Osteosarcoma Research Fund - Golf Day at the famous links, an event in memory of 15 years-old Christopher Hardman who had died in 2004. In advance of this year's event, Nick sent a golf driver for auction on the charity day saying that if it made more than £500, he would come and play a 4-ball with the highest bidders. The auction of the driver made £2,600.00 for CHORF - which is how Nick arrived to play in torrential rain and incidentally, make a lot of friends at Wallasey. Christopher's father, Chairman of the Trustees of CHORF and a member at Wallasey joined in the bid for the driver and played in the 4-ball with cousin Bryan Hardman from Northampton and Peter Cain, also a member at Wallasey said: "Nick was absolutely fantastic, brilliant. He was true to his word, found the time and did indeed break from his preparations from the Open to come here. He chatted all the way round about golf and other things and was just so helpful making time for photographers and to chat to everyone. Yes, he gave us a couple of tips on chipping for example. It poured all the way round but it did not make any difference. He just got on with it and still went round under par.

•  Further fund raising in memory of Jenny Carvell - June 2007

Some of Jennifer’s former dance colleagues and friends from Chesterfield High School organised a Dance and Song Show which was held at the Ainsdale Methodist Church Hall at the end of June. They performed an array of songs from the Phantom, Miss Saigon & Chicago and showed amazing talent and star potential.

Out of the money raised on the evening, £120.00 was donated to the Bone Cancer Research Trust in memory of Jennifer. A big thank you to all the performers, teachers and support staff who helped organise this event.

A special thank you to Karen for nominating our fund and for remembering Jennifer (who was one of her former dance partners). I understand how difficult this was for Karen and appreciate her courage and support.
Lin Carvell.

•  Wheely Good Time Had by All - 3rd June 2007

Mark Blanchard and Steve Wilkins took part in the Harbury Annual Wheelbarrow Race and helped to raise a fantastic £386 for BCRT. The race sees teams take on a course of more than a mile, visiting each of the five pubs in Harbury and drinking either a beer or water at each. Mark and Steve were supported on the day by Karen Hudson and Sarah Jane Wilkins. Chief organiser, Karen, ran a raffle over the three days before the race and on the day. Their local pub, The Shakespeare Inn, not only donated the first prize for the raffle (3 course meal for two), but also sponsored Mark and Steve in the race. A huge thankyou to Darren Carter, landlord of The Shakespeare Inn, who has also offered to hold a fun day in the pub gardens on August bank holiday to raise more funds for BCRT. Thanks also to the other people in the village who donated prizes for the raffle.

•  In Memory of Former Pupil Jennifer Carvell – June 2007

Chesterfield High School raised a further £300 for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. This was raised by year 13 students at their end of year Prom Dance. Each student donated £1 from their ticket and the Sixth Form Council held a raffle and change collection on the night of the event. A big thank you goes to all concerned for their continued support.

•  Rhodri Jones Sponsored Walk - 20th May 2007

The Rhodri Jones Memorial Appeal organised a sponsored walk to raise funds for Osteosarcoma research. Over 170 friends and people who had known Rhodri took part and many wore fancy dress. Before the start of the walk, the committee presented a cheque for £30,000 to the Bone Cancer Research Trust after which, everyone set off in the glorious sunshine along the promenade at Swansea Bay from Swansea to the Mumbles. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we raised more than £5,600 in the process.

•  Chesterfield High School Liverpool - 4th May 2007

Former school friends and colleagues at Chesterfield High School in Liverpool, had a mufti day and several raffles at Christmas, raising a fantastic £2,000 in aid of the Bone Cancer Research Trust. They did this in memory of Jennifer Carvell to commemorate the fact that she would have been leaving the sixth form unit this year.

Mr Simon Penney - School Head, Kath Murphy- Deputy Head and sixth form teachers and school counsellors, together with two of Jennifer’s close school friends Sarah Scraggs and Alison Veners, presented the cheque to Linda & Tim at a special 6th form assembly held on 4th May 2007. Jennifer’s family, her close cousin Rachael Harvey and close friend Jessica Rice (also pupils at the school) where all in attendance.

The picture was taken at Jennifer’s memorial bench in the school quad. Local press were also there and will include an article in the local newspaper to help promote awareness of bone cancer and the charity. The sixth form pupils have also kindly paid an additional £1.00 per ticket to attend their leaving Prom Dance and intend to do further fund raising on the night by having collection buckets around to raise additional funds for the Bone Cancer Trust. A further cheque will follow on after this event.

A big thank you to everyone involved for all their effort and kind support.

•  Mel King runs the London Marathon - 22nd April 2007

Mel King had applied to run the London Marathon for the last three years and was finally accepted this year. Suddenly she was faced with the reality of all the training and finding the best way to raise funds for her chosen charity. Speaking of Guy Francis as “an amazing individual” following his six year battle against bone cancer, Mel opened an online Just Giving site with the target of raising £1,000 for the Bone Cancer Research Trust of which the Guy Francis Bone Cancer Research Fund is a founder member.

Both the training and the fund-raising took off. Mel struggled with an injury but was determined to be fit in time. Guy’s parents realised that if Mel could increase her target to £1,500 and if this was reached, the charity started by Guy himself would have raised £100,000 by the 5th anniversary of his death, two days after Mel’s marathon run.

Two weeks to go and the target was reached. Mel was thrilled and driven on by so many people’s support for her in her efforts. On the day itself Mel wrote on her Just Giving site:- “I DID IT! 7:26:28 was the “official” time and I was a little disappointed but at least I finished … the heat was a big issue during the day and lots of water stations had run out when some of us got to them. Luckily my support team was on hand with water, fruit, ibuprofen, redbull…… Thanks to everyone who supported and donated – you know who you are!!!”

And we know who you are Mel. Someone with great determination and generosity who struggled through injury and pain to achieve a personal goal, at the same time raising a fantastic £3,450 to fund research into a devastating cancer, through which the outcome for future sufferers can eventually be improved.

I carried out a fund raising event in loving memory of my boyfriend, Gary Scott, for what would have been his 22nd Birthday. Knowing his wicked sense of humor I decided to organize a Slave Auction, with all of his friends offering to sell a service including Slave for the Night, Car Washing, Photographer and a Chef.

We had a total of 19 Slaves taking part and even the DJ put himself up at the end of the night! It was amazing how kind the local community were in donating raffle prizes we managed a total of 33 prizes and raised £400 with the raffle alone! We had a variety of prizes ranging from your usual vouchers through to Quad Biking tickets and a box of 20 Cornish Pasty’s! The night went fantastically well with everyone bidding high and we managed an overall sum of £1,580.00.

•  Yorkshire Aerobathon - 26th March 2007

In February 2004 Katie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma age six years old. After three months of chemotherapy, her right tibia was removed and replaced with a prosthesis, followed by another six months of chemotherapy. Katie was having physiotherapy and doing fine until November 2005, when she fell and broke her femur on the same leg. This caused Katie a lot of set backs and physiotherapy is still ongoing. However she is doing remarkably well and proved this by joining in the Yorkshire Aerobathon along with her Mum and Auntie and raised £575 which she has donated to the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

•  Sponsored Climb of Snowdon - 16th September 2006
In loving memory of Jennifer Carvell and in aid of The Bone Cancer Research Trust.

A big thank you to all the climbers and to all the people who kindly sponsored this event. A grand sum of £4,685.10 was raised in total. A special thank you to our family, Littlewood’s friends and colleagues for their support, in particular Paul Daley's sponsorship collecting at the Liverpool office on behalf of Paul Cryer, also to Steve Michael who between them raised over £1,400. A beautiful day was had by all and everyone felt a great sense of achievement, not only because they had climbed over 3,700 feet, but more importantly because they had done this in aid of such a good cause. Although everyone was aching for days afterwards, hopefully we can arrange yet another climbing event next year of either Scaefell Pike in the Lake District or Ben Nevis in Scotland, if anyone is up for the challenge of joining us. We will provide details on the website early next year for those interested. Remember, we are the very fortunate ones able to climb, just think of those who are diagnosed with Bone Cancer every year who are possibly not!

•  Adam Dealey Golf Day 15th September 2006

The 11th annual Adam Dealey Golf Day was held on Friday at Shendish Manor and attracted 18 teams including players that had flown in from as far a field as Portugal and Switzerland. The winners this year were locally based Capital Shopfitters with another local team No Girls Allowed coming in third. The best local individual scores were Richard Trott (BT Global) and Paul Newark (No Girls allowed). A car was put up for a hole in one by Toyota GB but unfortunately it was not won.

The golf was followed by a sit down meal in the marquee attended by 180 people including a table made up of Adams friends: Daniel Moody, Charlie Scott, Sam Chapman, Mark Brennan, Tom Fendick and Richard Edis, all of whom attended Southill School or played football for Hemel Lions. This year a friend of Adam's brother Justin, Dean Carroll who had played earlier in the day with Las Lomas Four, won the main prize at the evening function which was a weeks all inclusive holiday for two at The Beach Club in Antigua.

Adam died in July 1995 at the age of ten years after losing his fight to overcome the terrible childhood cancer Ewings Sarcoma and a fund was then set up in his memory and the highlight of fundraising each year is the golf day. This year the event raised £17,500 and took the total raised over the past eleven years to over the £220,000 mark. All funds raised are now channelled through The Bone Cancer Research Trust of which Adam’s father John is a trustee and is used for research into both Ewings and Osteosarcoma. Ewings Sarcoma is a bone cancer that affects some 80 children each year and sadly receives little central funding for research and has to rely on donations from families who have been affected.

One of the purposes of The Bone Cancer Trust is to raise awareness of bone cancers in children which hopefully will lead to them being detected quicker and giving a greater chance of being treated successfully. In addition more monies can be raised and coordinated for the research into these terrible cancers. Trustees include leading medical professionals Ian Lewis and Rob Grimer, a leading bone surgeon based in Birmingham. The funds raised through The Adam Dealey Foundation have been an inspiration for setting up this national charity.

Adam’s parents John and Marian and his brother Justin would like to thank everyone who has helped in any of the fundraising events or donated monies or prizes.

Big lorry just overtaken us and sprayed us from head to toe in wet, cold, muddy, gritty water that’s freezing cold. Not the best way to spend a Saturday getting swelled by lorries ever few miles. Great timing everyone keeping together supporting each other having a ball, laughing and joking the miles are soon being eaten away. Finally arrived at Silsden at 2.15 all ready for a hot bath to warm up and get clean. Let’s hope for better weather tomorrow. We are all looking forward to the bar b que tonight hopefully will be like last year and the sun will finally show it’s face for the last few hours. Early to bed to be bright and bubbling full of energy for tomorrow.

Far side of Harrogate and pit stop for refreshments MacDonald’s are really supportive letting us use their facilities, mind all the men do get a breakfast and coffee. As the support car drivers and passengers always get breakfast at Southport on the first day. Our first donation from customer who has heard about us on the radio great! Always stop just outside of York, going through York is such good fun! We all ring our bells and honk our horns as we go through, people who are out and about always response in a positive manner, lifts our spirits. Now have to concentrate none of us have done this route before so must be careful not to miss any signs or take any wrong turns. •  The Danish Bike Ride for Sarcoma Research and Awareness
     1st July to 7th July 2006

This was a Liddy Shriver sarcoma initiative project. Chris and myself took part and it was a wonderful experience. Meeting everyone that took part was a privilege. We took in Lego land, and everyday we cycled to our next destination. We took in the beautiful Fyn peninsula. There were about 60 in the group, made up of parents of lost children to sarcoma, survivors who were marvellous, research scientists, doctors and nurses who deal with sarcoma in their everyday lives. We have lovely memories of Denmark and lovely memories especially of the brave survivors of sarcoma they have a special place in our hearts forever. We were proud to give Bruce and Beverly Shriver 10,000 dollars from Ireland for Ewing Sarcoma research. Next year the cycle will be in Vermont USA. Click here for information (PDF document).
